What to expect in this article
What exactly is an SEO content audit?
I am often asked: Is it possible to "measure" the quality of content? And yes, it is indeed possible.
This brings us to the definition of a content audit: How good is the quality of the texts, images, and videos on a website – and what can be done to improve them further?
But there's more.
If you want to analyze a website, you should consider search engine optimization (SEO) in addition to the quality of the content.
an SEO content audit involves examining how well your content performs in search engines – and then developing suggestions on how you can achieve even better rankings.

Here's how to conduct a website content & SEO audit in 3 ½ steps
Every content audit follows a specific process: analysis, strategy, and planning. Following these same steps will yield comparable and reliable results. You can then use these results as a starting point for creating strategically better content.

1. Analysis: Evaluate the current content
My first step in every website content audit is to take a thorough look at the existing content:
- How much and what kind of content does your website have?
- How much of your content is optimized for SEO?
- For which keywords is your website currently ranking?
- Is there an active SEO strategy? If so, how old is it?
- What could be done differently to achieve better results?
- What about the user experience (UX) ?
- Does your website have multilingual SEO content in German, English, or other languages? Would an SEO translation beneficial?
2. Strategy: Define next steps
After that, I conduct a content audit to determine the next steps. I use several content audit tools; one of my favorites is Ubersuggest.
Then I categorize my results into quick, medium, and large changes – depending on how much effort is required to implement them. Afterward, I prioritize them in an Excel spreadsheet. Of course, I take the existing SEO content strategy into account
- Priority 1: Which changes have the greatest impact on your website's ranking? These could include, for example, 404 errors, missing SEO titles and meta descriptions, and duplicate content.
- Priority 2: Which changes have a significant impact? This could include metadata that is too long, too short, or duplicate; content with fewer than 300 words; content suffering from keyword cannibalization; outdated cornerstone pages, etc.
- Priority 3: What content could work even harder for you? This often includes consolidating and revising existing SEO content, creating new content to fill gaps in the content strategy, etc.

(Don't have an SEO content strategy yet? In my blog post "Creating an SEO Content Strategy – in 5 1/2 Steps" you'll learn how to create one. Or check out my FAQ page , where I answer questions about strategic content SEO.)
3. Planning: Plan your actions
In the final and most important step of every SEO content audit, I create an action plan. I call it my "SEO Content Roadmap." In it, I compile all the recommendations on what can and should be done to optimize your website as efficiently as possible.
If you implement it gradually, you can be sure that
- Find more visitors to your website
- The website receives more clicks and the conversion rate increases
- Thanks to improved UX , visitors will have more fun and stay on the site longer.
3 ½. Putting the plan into action
Now it's time to follow the defined steps and put them into practice. Use the plan as a checklist to keep track of your SEO audit progress.
It's quite simple once you know how, right? 😉
